Your UIC recruiters are getting ready to hit the road again this fall, and while we're at the fairs and in the high schools, I can guarantee more than a few of you will ask us this question:
Can you tell me about UIC's 7 year medical program?
Well, take note future doctors - UIC doesn't have an accelerated medical program. What we do have is something called the Guaranteed Professional Programs Admissions initiative. We like to call it GPPA for short. GPPA encompasses a bunch of professional programs at UIC, including Medicine - but rather than the program being shorter, it instead saves a spot for incoming freshmen in the professional program of their choice.
That means, that if you apply, and are admitted to UIC's GPPA Medicine program, for example, you'll know there will be a seat for you in the College of Medicine when you graduate with your bachelor's degree (assuming, of course you maintain the requirements of the program).
And while the program is not formally accelerated, some students do make it through faster than the traditional four years. They do this by accumulating a lot of AP credit in high school, attending summer school, or taking more than an average course load while in college. Or by any combination of above...but really, what's the hurry?
If you're interested in the GPPA program for Medicine or anything else then you should be aware of the minimum requirements:
Students must have an ACT composite score of at least 28 and be in the top 15% of their high school graduating class. Meeting these requirements allows you to apply to the program - but does not neccesarily mean you will be selected to participate.
For more information about GPPA and to view all the available programs you should head on over to their website: http://www.gppa.uic.edu
