Happy 2010 - Admissions Resolution #1 - Make sure your application is ready

Here's one New Year's resolution that's easy to keep. Make sure your application is complete!

As our deadline draws near (January 15th for candidates to our freshmen class) it would be a shame to be denied because you forgot to mail us a transcript or something. But fear not! Making sure your application is complete is something that's pretty easy to do.

Pending Manual Review Required.....wha??? or The Life of a Freshman Application

So the latest trend of our Admissions facebook page is basically this:

I have (Fill in the blank code) on my application status! What does that mean?!

Some code descriptions are pretty self evident - like admit, or deny, but many of the in between codes can be confusing - and as far as this admission counselor can tell - there's no legend or key on our website. So, I'll try to fill that void with this post, here we go:

Is it decision time yet?

Since every college and university has a different timeframe for making decisions, students who have applied by now are understandably getting a bit antsy about when they will here a decision.

The Chicago office is beginning to receive a bunch of phone calls, emails and Facebook posts from freshmen students who are asking things like:

"I applied to UIC four weeks ago, when will I have a decision?"

Well, here's UIC's rundown of our decision making process.

Transfer Application Deadline Extended: November 15

Interested Transfer students have a couple more weeks to send us an application to programs that admit for the Spring semester. You can complete the application online at: http://admissions.uic.edu/apply.

Reasons to pick a college #1: Location: Urban vs. Other

Mailers were dispatched last week directing students to a section of our website that talks about reasons that make UIC the type of school it is, and asking them to apply.

Your application, part II: Online or Paper?

Last year, when everything was said and done, UIC received about 15,000 applications for our freshman class. It was a record breaking year for us, in terms of the number of people vying for entry into Illinois' public urban research university. It was also a record breaking year for our online application. Nearly 80% of our applications came in online, no paper required.

Your application: more than just your GPA & ACT

This week, a good number of our Facebook friends had been posting on our wall their ACT scores and GPA and asking me (yes, the same guy who writes on the blog is the facebook/twitter guy as well) to tell them their chances for admission to the university.

This prompted me to write a little about the freshmen decision process.

Chicago missed the mark on the Olympics, but sports might still get a boost at UIC

We're in the middle of soccer & volleyball season here at UIC - which, for those of you that don't know, has a pretty robust Division 1 sports lineup.

UIC is a member of the Horizon League Conference - which is comprised primarily of urban Great Lakes schools. Other members include perennial rival, Loyola University, Butler, Valpo, Univ. of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and more!

The middle 50%

The middle 50% is a term that is probably not confusing to statisticians, researchers and admissions folk - but I have oft seen an eye glaze over when I mention the term to folks not as intimately familiar with mathematical magic.

Allow me to explain:

A question that comes up quite frequently during our weekday information sessions is "what is the minimum ACT score to be admitted to your prestigious university?" (Okay, people often times leave out the adjective ;)

UIC Myths #1 - The 7 year medical program

Your UIC recruiters are getting ready to hit the road again this fall, and while we're at the fairs and in the high schools, I can guarantee more than a few of you will ask us this question:

Can you tell me about UIC's 7 year medical program?

Welcome to the Freshmen!

As our newest crop of students settle into their classes (all 4000+ of them) I thought a good way to start this blog would be with some advice for our future graduates of 2013. Here's five points to consider as you make your way through your UIC journey!

1. Prioritize you're required classes, but also put yourself outside your comfort zone. Enroll in something like Theatre 161, especially if you can find a section taught by Professor Raffeld. Trust me on this one.
